Stained Glass at Saint Mark’s

Dating from its inception in 12th century Europe, stained glass fulfils a religious need – holy figures and biblical stories are both present before worshippers’ eyes (this was important when many were illiterate) and at the same time, transcendental in effect.

Although an ancient technique, contemporary stained glass is still being produced.

In the sanctuary, you will see a small rectangular window, designed by Peter Lees-Jeffries and made by Rena Jarosewitch in 1987 which commemorates Rev Sam Nicoll and unusually depicts local subject matter – the Port Hills and bees and beehives, his hobby.

New Zealand-specific stained glass in churches is rare.
